Urban Agriculture Extension in Florida: Barriers, Needs, and Opportunities

Much of the United States is urbanizing, increasing importance developing Extension programs geared toward urban audiences. There has been an interest in agriculture (UA) recent years as outgrowth “local food” movement. The COVID-19 pandemic increased awareness food system resilience, which can play a role. Developing specifically targeted to farming clientele bolster Cooperative Extension’s role supporting populations. An important first step these understand educators’ perceptions, beliefs, and knowledge about UA key barriers opportunities develop new that serve clientele. In this qualitative study, researchers conducted 17 semi-structured interviews educators who conduct programming. These see opportunity for reach audiences increase agricultural areas. most salient barrier faced or deliver programming lack time resources—both human financial.
